Burns Night

Every year on the 25th of January, Scotland celebrates ‘Burns Night’.

The celebrations commence this week for the life and legacy of the widely known national poet/lyricist Robert Burns also known as Rabbie Burns (1759-1796).

His famous poem/song ‘Auld Lang Syne’ is traditionally sung on Hogmanay, along with many others he wrote that are still being heard today.

Robert Burns is a cultural icon in Scotland and to celebrate his life and works each year we have a traditional Burns supper generally made up of Haggis, Neeps & Tatties accompanied by a traditional Scottish Whisky.

Haggis is a speciality pudding dish made from oats, spices, suet, onion and sheep’s pluck in an artificial casing, previously it would have been encased in a sheep’s stomach and boiled.  The dish is traditionally served with neeps (turnip) and tatties (mashed potatoes).

Rabbie’s hopes of equality and for a better world came in no better way than through his poetic, positive love and nature themes found throughout his works.

Will you be celebrating Robert Burns this Saturday?

We would love to hear where you are celebrating from.
